Here I Raise My Ebenezer…

I have almost stopped endlessly talking about and delighting in the wedding of our friends Michael and Autumn atthe end of April. I have joked, everywhere I go, I serve a community where I get to unite church members with strong opinions about the fact that there should be a hymn at a wedding, and that we should be sure to get the hymn from the right hymnal so the first part of the second verse of Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing reads:

Here I raise my ebenezer,
hither by thy help I’m come.
And I hope, by thy good pleasure,
safely to arrive at home.
In many hymnals, that phrase has been adapted because,
the thinking goes, nobody remembers what an ebenezer is
anymore. Even my spell check doesn’t recognize it
